Addis Ababa University, founded in 1950, is Ethiopia’s oldest university. It ranks first among 33 Ethiopian higher education institutions accredited by the Higher Education Relevance and Quality Agency and has a current enrolment of over 52,000 students. Water Resources Addis Ababa University has had a longstanding partnership with Bath Spa University, including a successful multi-partner Horizon 2020 bid (Horizon 2020, Project ID: 734596, EUR 1, 107, 000) exploring Slavery in Africa: a dialogue between Europe and Africa with both Bath Spa University and Addis Ababa University as part of this consortium. In June 2018 Professor John Strachan, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Executive Director of GALA and Dr Rebecca McGuire-Snieckus, Associate Academic Director of GALA met with colleagues at the University of Addis Ababa to explore further opportunities for collaborative research, teaching and staff and student mobility between Universities, and across the GALA network.

In November, 2018, the Chair of the Board of Governors at Bath Spa University, Terence Jagger, and the President of Addis Ababa University, Professor Tassew Woldehanna exchanged an MOU agreement of Institutional Co-operation and Support to promote: Visiting faculty and staff; Joint research, service and entrepreneurial activity; Exchanges of information and material; Joint initiatives in research funding; and Joint participation in the Global Academy of Liberal Arts (GALA).
