Melting ice is the visible sign of change in the Arctic circle, but behind the scenes, states are positioning themselves for a “New Great Game”. Historically the “Great Game” described the power struggle between the great nations of the Russian and British Empires over territories, communications links, and natural resources in central Asia. As the ice-free zones in the Arctic circle continue to widen each year, North America, the European nations, Russia, and China are setting out strategies. Each wants to gain access to undiscovered natural resources, trade routes, fisheries, and geopolitical advantage.
