The project Digital Climate Futures: A decolonial and justice perspective on digitalised climate change adaptation is led by Dr Giovanni Bettini (Lancaster University) and Dr Giovanna Gioli (Bath Spa University, School of Science), and includes Prof. Sian Sullivan (Bath Spa University, School of Writing, Publishing and the Humanities) as a Co-investigator.

Digital Climate Futures addresses the proliferation of digital climate services and the lack of critical scholarship on how the digital impacts adaptation to climate change.
The project team aim at addressing this gap and develop an innovative decolonial and justice-focused theoretical framework able to conceptualise the justice implication of digital adaptation and challenge the coloniality of relations, epistemologies and practices which pervade mainstream (digital) adaptation. They will also conduct an in-depth case study in Bihar, India, where ground-breaking ‘smart’ adaptation schemes have been launched.

The team will extend to digital climate services calls by critical scholars to contextualise and politicize adaptation, pluralise climate knowledges and epistemologies, and ensure ‘cognitive justice’. The project is set to kick off in October 2022 and will run for three years.
