The Universidad de Antioquia is a public university founded in 1803. Its main campus is located in the city of Medelliìn, Colombia; additionally, it has other campuses and facilities in the nine regions of the department of Antioquia, Colombia.
The purpose of Universidad de Antioquia is to pursuit, develop, and spread knowledge in the fields of humanities, science, arts, philosophy, and technology through research, teaching, and outreach activities. These activities are included in both undergraduate and graduate programs using in-person, blended, and open and distance learning methods and are at the service of a comprehensive understanding of the human being.
The University consists of 25 academic units divided into 14 faculties, four schools, four institutes, and three corporations that together offer around 130 undergraduate programs. Moreover, it offers 48 specializations, 50 medical specialties, 73 master’s programs, and 27 PhD programs, for a total of 190 graduate programs. By the end of 2024 the University had 40.624 students.
The Faculty of Arts of the University of Antioquia is an academic unit dedicated to the study, research, production, conservation and dissemination of disciplines related to music, visual arts and performing arts, somatic disciplines and cultural management. It offers 10 undergraduate programs namely: Scenic Arts, Fine Arts, Digital Creation, Cultural Management, Music, Lyric Singing, BA in Arts, BA in Music and BA in Dance, and 6 postgraduate programmes such as: Doctorate in Arts, MA in Art History (in person and virtual), MA in Arts, MA in Cultural Management, MA in Musics of Latin America and the Caribbean, MA in Dramaturgy and Direction. We collaborate with a MA in Creation and Audio-visual Studies (Faculty of Communication) and with a MA in Conflicts, Peaces and Human Rights (Faculty of Law and Faculty of Education).
The faculty has 10 Research Groups, and 14 Semilleros de Investigacioìn (research initiatives for undergraduate students). By the end of 2024 we had 1.270 students, 1.195 in Undergraduate programmes and 75 in Postgraduate programmes. With this built capacity the Faculty trains highly qualified art professionals, educators, cultural managers and researchers. The Faculty ìs outreach is through continuing education programs and pre-university and extension programs, in the non-formal education modality. Over time, the Faculty of Arts has established itself as one of the most important centres of study, extension, conservation and dissemination of the arts disciplines. Its students, teachers and graduates are highly qualified and recognized professionally and academically in the Department of Antioquia, in Colombia and internationally, thanks to their work in the artistic field of creation, teaching, research, cultural promotion, academic promotion and extension.
The Faculty of Arts offers exceptional resources such as the Cultural Extension Center, with a wide range of offerings and networks at a national level; the Cultural Center in the Carlos C. Restrepo neighborhood, which functions as a meeting and permanent programming space; the CreaLab, a multidisciplinary laboratory for creation and innovation; and Artes la Revista, a publication specialized in the arts.
Additionally, the University of Antioquia has the University Museum, which houses important heritage collections such as those of Anthropology, Visual Arts, Natural Sciences and History; In addition to the Carlos Gaviria Diìaz Library, the Camilo Torres University Theatre, the Teresita Goìmez Performing Arts Hall, the Cultural Radio Station, the publishing house, the interuniversity bookstore, and the Luis Alberto Aìlvarez Cinematheque, these spaces and resources enrich the educational process and connect students with a vibrant and dynamic cultural environment.
