Södertörn University, Sweden

Södertörn University is a mid-sized university located in the southern parts of Stockholm, Sweden. It was founded in 1996 with the aim to strengthen social mobility and development in the region and is today an internationally recognized research and education institution with around 14 000 students, 80 programmes and 300 courses within the humanities, social sciences, technology and natural sciences. Media and Communication Studies (MCS) belong to the School of Culture of Education which gathers disciplines within the liberal arts, such as philosophy, literature, art history and aesthetics. The school was previously home for an interdisciplinary undergraduate program in liberal arts. Today, MCS offers two undergraduate programmes in media studies – one with an international profile – and a two-year international master’s programme. The department also have PhD training in Critical Cultural Theory and Educational Studies. The research in MCS focuses the contemporary digital media society from a historicizing, humanist and critical perspective, often with a global outlook.
