The science of complexity conveys a very similar worldview to that Daoism and many forms of indigenous wisdom and paints a picture of a world radically interwoven, always becoming, shaped by history and context. To engage with that world, to ‘know about’ that world cannot be achieved through rational means alone. We need ways of engaging with the subjective, the ‘only just emerging’, where the knower and the known are not separable. How do we do this? What is the role of art, poetic expression, the imagination, our gut instincts and our intuitions? Complexity re-enchants science.
 
Bio: Jean Boulton studied physics before turning to management and the social sciences. She has an international reputation for her contribution to the science of complexity and its application to the social and natural world – ways of knowing, leadership, ethics and sustainability. She is keenly interested in global futures and transformational change, engages in local politics and place-based initiates and links this to personal ‘cultivation’ and the centrality of relationships. Her recent book is The Dao of Complexity (2024:De Gruyter).
