Focusing on digital cultural memory, SUNY Geneseo is participating in GALA’s Lost Waters project, which will locate place-based discovery around the theme of missing waters, whether such absence is due to urbanization and “progress”, environmental degradation/ desertification, industrialization or other profit-driven instrumentalization of waterways. Trevor Turpin, an environmental manager with a focus on assessment and research studies related to water issues, presented his Master’s research at Geneseo in early June. Highlighting the many rivers that flow into the Thames that are buried, neglected or forgotten, Turpin demonstrated how elements of our forgotten culture and environmental heritage can be remembered through the study of literature. Turpin is completing an MA in Literature, Landscape and Environment at Bath Spa University, where he served as associate director of studies for the MSC Integrated Environmental Management degree. His visit was funded by a Santander Mobility Grant. In addition, Rachel Hall, Geneseo professor of English, attended a meeting in Sweden on transnational writing. Also, Geneseo’s new president, Denise Battles, and Paul Schacht, professor of English and department chair, will attend the second annual GALA conference in Beijing in early July.
