Founded in 1871, the State University of New York at Geneseo has evolved into one of the premier public liberal arts colleges in the U.S. The College is located in the historic village of Geneseo, a short drive from Rochester and Buffalo. Among the most selective public colleges, Geneseo is highly ranked in national publications for academic quality and value. With 54 undergraduate majors and an array of dual degree and international study programs, Geneseo develops socially responsible citizens with skills and values for a productive life. Learn more about Geneseo and its international programs at www.geneseo.edu and www.geneseo.edu/oip. Focusing on digital cultural memory, SUNY Geneseo is participating in GALA’s Lost Waters project, which will locate place-based discovery around the theme of missing waters, whether such absence is due to urbanization and “progress”, environmental degradation/ desertification, industrialization or other profit-driven instrumentalization of waterways. Trevor Turpin, an environmental manager with a focus on assessment and research studies related to water issues, presented his Master’s research at Geneseo in early June. Highlighting the many rivers that flow into the Thames that are buried, neglected or forgotten, Turpin demonstrated how elements of our forgotten culture and environmental heritage can be remembered through the study of literature. Turpin is completing an MA in Literature, Landscape and Environment at Bath Spa University, where he served as associate director of studies for the MSC Integrated Environmental Management degree. His visit was funded by a Santander Mobility Grant. In addition, Rachel Hall, Geneseo professor of English, attended a meeting in Sweden on transnational writing. Also, Geneseo’s new president, Denise Battles, and Paul Schacht, professor of English and department chair, will attend the second annual GALA conference in Beijing in early July.
